10 Tips for Bossing Up: Takeaways from our Boss Up Brunch

Charisse Fields

This past Sunday, we had a blast in LA hosting our first ever Boss Up Brunch! We all left encouraged and inspired as our three panelists shared some powerful messages about living in your purpose and being a BOSS!

Sad you missed out? Don't worry, we got ya covered.

Here are 10 Takeaways from our Boss Up Brunch:

Trust your purpose and follow your heart.

Having faith in your dreams is essential. Our panelist Vic Styles drove to LA with $350 to her name to follow her dreams of being a stylist. Her parents didn't quite understand, and it wasn't always easy... but she found her way. Sometimes, the only one that has to understand your vision is you.

Everything is Negotiable.

Our panelist Asia David of Die Free Studios made an important point when she urged us not to give up every time you hear "no." Everything in life is negotiable, and you can learn to make any situation work for you with a little negotiating skills. Finess, girl. Finess!

Be Flexible

All of our panelists stressed the importance of being flexible when running a business. The world is constantly changing, and if you don't learn to change with it...you'll be left behind. Don't be afraid to let your plans evolve.

Bossin' Ain't Easy

All of our panelists are workaholics, and they believe you have to be if you want to make it as your own boss. While many see the entrepreneurship life as an endless cycle of vacations and margaritas on the beach, the reality is that it's a lot of responsibility...and a lot of work.

F*CK your Plan B

Vic Styles gave us reality check when she encouraged us to ditch our plan B, and focus on our Plan A...our passions. Many of us spend years and years building lives outside of the things we really want to do for the sake of being comfortable or having a "back-up" if our real dreams don't work out. However, by the time we feel ready to go for our dreams, we're already drained, comfortable and often times complacent. Go for Plan A first!

Don't Expect Overnight Success

It's common to see people's success stories..but we don't often see the struggle it took for those people to get there. Each of our panelists stressed that you can't go into the girl boss world and expect instant success. It takes time, patience, consistency and persistence. Do it for the love, not for an immediate paycheck.

Discipline is Key

Being your own boss comes with freedom, but you can't abuse it if you want to meet your goals. Asia shared that she learned early in career that she needed to learn discipline.

Speak and Act with Confidence

The way you speak of yourself and carry yourself is exactly how others will you perceive you. So speak with confidence, keep your head up, and keep those hand shakes strong. Don't underplay your accomplishments and ideas...speak highly of the things you're doing! Your business may be small, but it's still a business! Like DJ Khalid would say...don't ever play yourself!

Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

Collaboration and support between businesswomen can truly move mountains. As women, it's crucial to have each other's back and support each other to succeed.

Just Start.

All of our panelists agreed that the best time to start living your dreams is NOW. Start where you are. There's really nothing to it but to, literally, do it.

Hope this encourages you bossbabes to keep it movin! Don't  forget to subscribe to our newsletter...you don't want to miss our next Boss Up Brunch!

" Hello my name is Edyeliz but you can call me edgy. I'm a hair enthusiast, a woman with a goal that is in process of accomplishing. I help women feel confident to embrace their beauty regardless of what the society says. "

We caught up with the beautiful Curly.Edgy to get some insight on who she is and what she shes all about. Check out this exclusive mini interview and learn why she is the definition of a true boss babe!

1. What gets you up in the morning?

Ambition, I have so much more to accomplish and that alone is what drives me to continue getting out of my comfort zone and getting one step closer to where I want to be. I do this for myself, my parents who have been my cheerleaders since day one and also for my future kids one day I'll have. I want to be able to share a story with them and tell it's true the sky is the limit

2. What’s your personal life philosophy?

Personal life is meant to be personal

3. How would you describe your style?

Cool calm and collective, I'm not big on flashy things since those come and go. I like simplicity in all aspects

4. What would constitute a perfect day?

Being able to come home and at night thank god for another productive day, tomorrow is never promised. Everything I have and earned is something I'll be forever grateful for. Perfect doesn't exist and once I accepted that, opportunities started knocking.

5. Name three people, dead or alive, that you’d like to invite to dinner?

My great grandmother she was our families rock may she rip, she taught everyone strength, joy and humbleness.

My mother because she is living proof that hard work pays off and no matter what she is by my side.

Lastly my boyfriend, he's my other half and helps me open my eyes and reminds me it's okay to be different.

6. What would your very last meal entail?

Hmmmmm that's simple, a Bandeja paisa. That's a Colombian dish which has rice, beans, steak, egg, plantains and pork rind!

7. If you were a song which one would you be?

Hmmmm tough! Too many good ones to choose from

8. Tell us a secret

I never kiss and tell :)

9. Your favorite quote?

" don't chase people. Be yourself do your own thing and work hard. The right people - the ones who really belong in your life will come to you and stay" - will smith

10.Your proudest moment?

I've come along way from who I was to who I am now, my moment had not come yet. The day I graduate from my masters now that, will be a proud moment.

11. What is your current state of mind?

Peaceful and confident. Good things can happen to good people

12. Knowing what you know today, what advice would you give yourself?

Never give up, times will get hard and doors will be closed in your face but there will be tons of other doors to knock on.

Stassi X Emmi+Reese

Charisse Fields

We met Dallas entrepreneur, Tiereny and immediately admired her. Aside from being a full-time nurse, Tiereny is a web designer, fashion blogger, brand influencer and owner of online optique boutique known as shopstassi.com. This girl has got it going on and we had to honor her! Get to know a personal side of her here and see why we love this boss lady so much...

Who are you?

"I’m kind of a multi-tasker, jack of all trades. RN by day, freelance graphic designer, entrepreneur and stylist. Anyone that knows me knows I’m always on the go with a million things going on."

What gets you up in the morning?

Coffee! And opportunity. Any day that I can make a sale or expand my businesses in anyway. Usually I spent all night coming up with new ideas that I want to put into action.

What’s your personal life philosophy?

It’s the simple things that matter and you always can bounce back from whatever is thrown at you so keep it moving because life ALWAYS goes on. I really try to keep a positive outlook because your thoughts frame your world and try not to let things I can’t control stress me out.

How would you describe your style?

My style is a mix some days between modern androgyny and really girly. I’m on both ends of the spectrum but I tend to stick to dark or neutral colors when it comes to my preferred color palette. I like simplicity and clean lines. Every now and then I’ll add a statement piece like a hot pair of shoes or a bag.

What would constitute a perfect day?

A perfect day for me is just the freedom to design and create with no interruptions. All I need is coffee, a good space, good music and Wi-Fi!

Name three people, dead or alive, that you’d like to invite to dinner?

Rihanna – she does no wrong in my book. I’m OBSESSED with her style & “I don’t care what you think” attitude, plus we’re both Pisces!

Kanye – his creativity is on another level. True visionary.

Addison from Grey’s Anatomy –she’s obviously only a character but I wanted to be her so bad.

What would your very last meal entail?

I’m a fat kid on the inside, I LOVE food! It would definitely have to be a buffet of all my favorites. I’d need everything from sushi, shrimp tacos, mac and cheese to raspberry sherbet and margaritas.

If you were a song which one would you be?

I’d probably be more like a mixtape with ratchet tracks from Future and Young Thug all the way to something super emotional from Drake.

Tell us a secret.

I’m a terrible texter and I think a lot of people believe I’m a people person but I’m actually pretty introverted and I love being home. Crowds of people scare me.

Your favorite quote?

“Focus on Overdrive, Style on Overdressed.”

I came up with it for my Instagram but it describes me to a T.

Your proudest moment?

I honestly don’t think I’ve hit it yet. It’s going to fall somewhere between getting my Masters and getting married to my boyfriend!

What is your current state of mind?

Just focusing on me. Setting goals and reaching them. Life has changed from worrying about the turn up to worrying about baking cookies, interior decorating and a quiet life lol.

Knowing what you know today, what advice would you give yourself?

SLOW DOWN! I’m 28 now and  I got skipped a couple of grades in school so all of my friends were way older than me and I was always trying to keep up with them, but now I wish I had enjoyed some things a little longer on my own time because now all I think about is almost being 30. Also, no matter how annoying she can be sometimes, I always find myself wishing I’d listened to my mom’s advice instead of being hardheaded!

DIY- Rose Water

Why we love it?

We have been obsessed with rose water lately and no wonder because its everywhere, but why do people love it so much? Not only does rose water make your skin smell amazing and can double as a natural perfume, rose water has a lot of benefits for maintaining healthy clear skin!

Use it for:

  • skin/face toner
  • acne
  • anxiety relief/relaxation

I love to use it in the morning after I first wash my face or after a workout to refresh my skin.  You can use it as a hydrator and keep it in your purse for the summer on those hot days.

DIY

  • Mini Spray bottle
  • Distilled clean water
  • Fresh rose petals that are free of chemicals or pesticides

E+R Method-Hot Water Infusion: Place rose petals in a jar or mug, pouring boiling water over it, allow it to sit for several hours. (Make sure container is sealed while sitting)

Coconut Magic

Charisse Fields

Coconut Oil is life! It has been making our world go round for quite some time now and we are so happy to share with you all why. We know spring/summer is around the corner and all of you beauties are on a mission to get that body summer ready, but why not get your skin in shape too. Coconut oil does 1 thing and its the key ingredient to a flawless body: That is having healthy and beautiful naturally glowing skin! (without all of the extra chemicals that live in most moisturizers.)

We use coconut oil for literally EVERYTHING!

+For instance, when Im running out of the house and Im wearing a dress I always break for coconut oil because it leaves my legs with a polished beautiful shine.

+When you don't have time to get a mani or pedi rub coconut oil on your cuticles to keep your nails looking fresh to hold you over for your next appointment.

+We know long hot showers are must, but ever notice that the heat from the water drys out your skin, an easy fix is to lather your body in coconut oil and wipe the excess off with a small hand towel. Your skin will look amazing we promise.

+Lips are too dry? Dab some coconut oil on then follow with your normal lip routine.

+Use is to remove my stubborn eye makeup and eyelash glue (insert praise jesus emoji here) Yes! Its a life savor because it will get every single bit of left over makeup leaving your eyes fresh and clean. (it also moisturizes your eyelashes and promotes growth for longer lashes)

+The humidity is frizzing up your hair? Kill the frizz with a touch of coconut oil by combing a tiny dab into your hair.

There are a million uses for this including cooking but these are some of our favs. If you love it let us know and share with your girls @emmiandreese

E+R #HolidayGiveBack: 10 Ways to give back this season

Charisse Fields

Hello Ladies!

This year we wanted to do something special by giving you a guide on ways to give back and reach out to your local community this holiday season. My father always told me "You think you have it bad, but there's always someone out there who has it worse than you." This is all too true and it has always stuck with me since. When I complain about the petty things, I have to check myself and remind myself that there is no reason for me to be ungrateful. There are so many ways for us to share our blessings and time to help others who may need it more. I put together a list of ideas on how you can give back! Hold yourself accountable this season and try to do one of them before the new year kicks in!

  1. Volunteer at your nearest animal shelter: Pets need love too! This is one of my favorite ways to give back. You can call a shelter and see what supplies they need and drop them off or you can volunteer with your time. Make sure to call ahead of time to make an appointment, most shelters like to schedule volunteer opportunities.
  2. Volunteer at a local soup kitchen: Contact a local nonprofit soup kitchen and ask for volunteer hours. Its always nice to have a conversation and connect with new people other than those in our everyday lives.
  3. Enter a charity walk, run, ride, or tri and save lives! There are always runs popping up in major cities where you can support a cause and get involved. Grab your girlfriends and family and get signed up! If you are in the Dallas area log on to dfwraces.com to check upcoming events.
  4. Read to the elderly: Visit your nearest elderly home and give a little cheer to those who need it most, our elders. Again, your time alone can mean the world to someone. Call ahead to see if there are open hours to visit.
  5. Find your own way to give back: If you know someone that is in need but don't know how to give back, this is that time of year to be creative and do so.
  6. Small acts of kindness add up: Commit to doing one act of kindness a day that promotes selflessness. (You should always be doing this but this time of year, step it up!)
  7. Volunteer at a church: Theres no other way, churches always need a helping hand.
  8. Call your local food bank/ food pantry and make a donation: Call ahead and see if there are any specific items that they are low in stock. They will appreciate anything that you may have to give.
  9. Gather up your unused coats and warm clothing and donate them: Goodwill and salvation army are the most known spots. If you prefer a place that does not resale look up local churches and charities that will donate your old coats to families in need for free. (There are also drop boxes in major parking lots like grocery stores that will take clothing)
  10. Bring a box of toys to a children's hospital: To see the smile on a child's face receiving a toy is priceless!

Okay, now you have no excuse not to get involved. God bless you ladies and have an amazing holiday season.
